Chery buys Nissan factory and will make Aglomerado Digital cars in Spain
The plans of Chery Establishing itself in the European market is in full swing now that the Chinese brand has purchased the former Nissan factory in Barcelona, Spain. The unit, closed in 2021, will now be Chery's first factory on the continent, and already has a possible investment of 400 million, enabling the supply of models in the region.
Partnership with EV Motors and optimism in Chery's plans
Carried out in partnership with the Spanish company EV Motors, operations are expected to begin in the coming months. According to Chery's executive vice president, Guibing Zhang, the plans are optimistic. “Once we reach sufficient scale, we will export to the rest of Europe and other countries, transforming the factory into one of Chery’s main export facilities worldwide.” The information comes from the agency Reuters.
Production of the Omoda 5 and Jaecoo 7 models at the factory acquired by Chery
It is expected to have up to 1,250 workers, as well as making use of a large proportion of former Nissan employees. Soon, the factory will start producing the SUV Omoda 5, both the combustion and electric models. So, later, another SUV, this time the Jaecoo 7, will also be produced there. Plans foresee that, by 2029, annual production will be 150 thousand vehicles.
Economic impact and job replacement in Spain
Thus, considering local production, it will be easier for Chery brands to supply models to the market, as well as avoid economic sanctions or even new customs fees, for example. The purchase of the factory received special attention from the Spanish government.
This is due to the need to replace part of the 1,600 jobs lost in 2021 due to the closure of the Nissan factory in the country, however. The unit produced models such as the pickup Frontier and its sisters Renault Alaskan and Mercedes-Benz X-Class, and the NV200 van, for example.
