Farewell to Factories in Colombia and Ecuador
A Chevrolet there will be no more factories in Colombia and in Ecuador. The automaker confirmed the closure of activities in the respective countries through an official statement. In this way, the brand that belongs to the group General Motors states that it will only operate in these markets as an importer. According to the GM of South America, the measure is part of a new business strategy that is being implemented by the automaker.
Production Closed
“Production operations will come to an end at the Colmotores plant in Colombia and the closure process has already begun with a reduced team. At the OBB plant in Ecuador, manufacturing will end in August 2024”, informs GM. Thus, the closure of activities in Colombia is immediate, while in Ecuador production continues for another three months.
Chevrolet produced Joy and D-Max in factories
On the plant Colmotors in Bogotá, the North American brand manufactured the Chevrolet Joy, O Chevrolet Joy Plus and some trucks. Joy was the entry-level version of Onyx, but was discontinued in Brazil in 2022. The hatch was actually made in the interior of São Paulo, in Sao Caetano do Sul. However, such production only accounts for 9% of the Bogotá factory's capacity.
At the OBB (Ómnibus BB Transportes) plant in Quito, the focus was on the production of the pickup truck Isuzu D-Max It's from Sail. Furthermore, it is also worth highlighting that the D-Max is based on the same project as the S10 made in Brazil. There, the site operates with 13% of capacity.
No Impact in Brazil
However, GM states that the closure of activities in Colombia and Ecuador will not affect other Latin American countries, such as Brazil, for example. Here, Chevrolet's factories are located in Sao Caetano do Sul (SP), São José dos Campos (SP) and in Gravatai (LOL).
