New Toyota models: Aglomerado Digital invests in pickup truck and compact SUV

Toyota Yaris Cross

The SUV and pickup truck segments are booming in Brazil. In order not to be left out, the Toyota will also have a pickup to call yours and, thus, compete in the same category in Fiat Toro, Chevrolet Montana, Ford Maverick and company. Furthermore, the Japanese manufacturer will launch the Yaris Cross compact SUV, to increase the options alongside the utility vehicles that sell the most in Brazil. Both models are part of the investment of R$ 11 billion by 2030, recently announced by the manufacturer.

Details about the new models

During the launch event of Corolla Cross, this Monday (22), a source linked to the brand confirmed to the Car Newspaper that the duo arrives between 2025 and 2026. “Toyota even tried to bring forward the production of the Yaris Cross to this year, but it was impossible. So, it is certain that it will arrive next year. And the pickup comes the following year, after all, both models are part of the new investment cycle in the country”, says the source.

It is worth remembering that, according to Toyota, of this amount – R$ 11 billion -, R$ 5 billion is already confirmed until 2026 and includes the production of a new compact hybrid flex vehicle. It is not spoken directly about Yaris Cross, but everything indicates.

Yaris Cross: Toyota's compact SUV

In any case, the compact SUV will be manufactured at the Sorocaba (SP) plant, benefiting from an investment of R$ 1.7 billion, which includes the nationalization of the model's flex hybrid set – made in Porto Feliz (SP). The engine will be 1.5 aspirated, flex, with four cylinders and 16 valves. This is an updated version of what already equips the Yaris sedan and hatch here.

Furthermore, it will have a flex hybrid version (uses the same 1.5 and an electric unit, totaling 111 hp of power). In this way, it will act as Toyota's third flex hybrid, remaining below the Corolla Cross. It will use the DNGA platform, a simplified (but electrification-ready) version of TNGA. Finally, when talking about dimensions, the SUV will be 4.31 meters long, 2.62 m wheelbase, 1.62 m high and 1.77 m wide. The measurements are very close to those of the Hyundai Creta, for example.

Pickup: Toyota's novelty in the segment

It's been a long time since Toyota showed interest in producing a anti-Toro pickup truck in Brazil. At the 2023 Tokyo Motor Show, for example, the company revealed the concept EPU, an electric midsize pickup truck. However, the model to be made in Brazil will be a flex hybrid, a new technology in the category. Recently, it was even reported in the media that the Metalworkers Union of Sorocaba (SP) confirmed studies by the brand for the manufacture of the pickup truck.

The model will have an intermediate size and a unibody body. However, regarding the platform, we don't know for sure. While some are betting on the same base as the Corolla Cross (TNGA), others say that the newcomer would use the DNGA platform – the same as the Yaris Cross – to reach the market with a more competitive price. In any case, Toyota does not discuss future plans.
