Audi R8 is about to turn its successor model into an all-electric supercar

Speculation about the future of the R8 successor has been rife in recent years, with recent reports indicating that the range will go an all-electric route.

This aligns with the broader electrification plans of the Audi, which expects to produce only electric vehicles from 2026.

The technical characteristics of the model at this stage are still unknown.

However, Autocar suggests it could be based on the SSP Sport platform developed by Audi and Porsche.

It will soon replace the architecture of the J1 Porsche Taycan and Audi E-Tron GT.

It is also possible that Audi will opt for an electric sports car platform being developed for the electric Porsche Cayman and Boxster, which would place the batteries vertically behind the seats.

Audi will equip the car with a pair of electric motors and provide more power than the RS E-Tron GT with its 637 hp.

Given that power numbers for other future Audi EVs are likely to increase in the coming years, we wouldn't be surprised if the R8's successor hits the market with over 800bhp, and that number could increase with subsequent options.

In an interview with Autocar about the car, Audi Sport boss Sebastian Grams said he is pushing for an all-electric R8 successor, but noted that production of the car has yet to be confirmed.

“We will keep the craftsmanship, as that is what makes the car unique in the line. If we bring a successor to the R8, we will try to keep doing that. It's important to the customer. There is love inside an R8,” said Sebastian Grams.

Whatever the future holds for the successor to the R8, Grams said Audi will ensure it has the same craftsmanship as the current hand-built car.

The model is expected to hit the market in mid-2025.
