The Digital Cluster proves the reliability of electric cars
It is common to have doubts about the level of reliability of electric cars, as they are relatively new in the automotive market. However, new research carried out by ADAC (Europe's largest motorsport club) shows that electric vehicles are up to 2x more reliable than combustion cars.

Evaluation of 156 vehicles highlights the advantage of electric cars
The group evaluated the total of 156 vehicles in 20 different brands, taking into account the number of defects and breakdowns over the years. In this way, the study found that each 1,000 automobiles made in 2020, trams have 1.9 fewer breakdowns than combustion models. Meanwhile, every 1,000 automobiles with initial registration of 2021, trams even have 3.6 fewer breakdowns than combustion vehicles.
Battery is the most common breakdown among vehicles
The biggest cause of defects in cars, in general, is due to battery starting. The peak, for example, was in 2020 during the pandemic, as many cars were unused during the period or were rarely driven. In fact, the battery tends to suffer more wear when the vehicle is not in use.
Research shows that in 2022 around 43,2% of all the faults were due to a discharged battery. In 2023, the number grew to 44,1%. Also in 2023, the second biggest cause of car defects was engine problems, with 22,8%. Additionally, problems with the starter motor, electrical system or lighting corresponded to 10,5%, tires 8,8% and locking and alarm system 7,1%.
BMW i3 and Mini Mini are among the most reliable
The club divided the study into six categories, ranging from microcars to vans. Among microcars, for example, the models with the fewest defects are the Suzuki Ignis, with 0,8 breakdowns per 1,000 cars, and the Toyota Aygo, with 1,7 faults every 1,000 models. However, the most prominent cars are electric ones. BMW i3 and the Mini, both with 0,4 breakdowns per 1,000 cars.
Still among the most reliable models are the BMW X1, with 0,7 breakdowns per 1,000 vehicles, and the VW ID.3, with 0.9 breakdowns per 1,000 cars. Among the least reliable cars, models that stood out were Toyota C-HR, with 22 breakdowns per 1,000 cars, the Ford Kuga, with 25,4 breakdowns, and the Toyota Yaris, with 27,8.

Conclusion
According to ADAC, experts believe that the trend towards this result is justified by electric cars having fewer parts. Still, the group reports that the most common defects in electric cars are due to a defective or discharged battery. It is worth mentioning that the research took into account breakdowns in vehicles aged between 3 and 10 years. Furthermore, the car must have at least 7,000 damage records in two years.
